How To Protect Your Skin While Wearing Halloween Makeup

Although Halloween is a fun chance to get creative with your makeup, it often causes major skin irritation. Most costume makeup contains latex, which is designed to be on your face for only short periods of time. Costume makeup kept on any longer than Halloween night will more than likely clog pores, cause allergic reactions and even inflame your skin and eyelids. In order to keep your skin unharmed during the Halloween fun, follow these before and aftercare steps!

Before Touching Your Face

Whatever you use for makeup application should be extremely clean. You should be cleaning brushes, beauty blenders and sponges frequently in general, but especially before applying thick, costume makeup. Next, ensure the area in which you are doing your makeup is also clean. If you haven’t identified it yet, the name of the game is CLEANLINESS! If you don’t have brush cleanser, use warm water. It is important to not cross contaminate the brushes. Rinse each brush one at a time. Once cleaned, reshape the wet bristles if need be then set them out to dry on a towel. For optimal results, clean brushes 24 hours in advance.

Face Prep and Post-Wash

Before any costume makeup is applied, gather your favorite face scrub or cleanser and remove any existing makeup. With your face scrub, exfoliate your face in a circular motion. Exfoliating will remove any dead skin cells, which will allow easier application of makeup or any prosthetics.

Once you have rinsed away any facial scrub, proceed through your normal skin routine. If you usually apply toner or moisturizer after cleansing, do not skip these steps. Since you are shocking your skin with foreign, costume makeup, keep your skin care regimen as normal as possible. You will repeat this very same process when it comes time to remove your costume makeup.

Here at FYBC, we have tested a few fabulous skin care tips that not only work but can be done in the comfort of your own home. Save your self a trip to the drug store because the ingredients you need for a quick skin care fix are most likely in your cabinets at home. Take control of your skin care once and for all with the help of these tips. 

Sea Salt: Sea salt is an antiseptic, which is why many people notice that their skin clears up after being at the beach. The good news is that you don’t need to spend hours in the ocean to reap the benefits of saltwater. You can simply apply sea salt to your face to remove age spots, acne, and wrinkles.

Try it at home: All you really need to do is add one tablespoon of sea salt to a 16-ounce spray bottle of warm water. Lightly spritz your face with the combination each night and let the salt do its work.

Aspirin and Honey: This combination is perfect with skin irritation and inflammation strikes. Although aspirin is most commonly used for pain, it also reduces external swelling, which means a red, irritated pimple can go from noticeable to hardly visible in a short amount of time. Honey, on the other hand, is a natural antibiotic that can disinfect your pores.

Try it at home: Crush a single aspirin in a bowl and add a small amount of toner to create a paste. Apply the paste to your blemish for around five minutes. Wash it off and then apply honey and leave it on for ten minutes. 

Lemon and Sugar:  This little trick is great if you are dealing with stubborn pores clogged with dirt and oil. This pair targets oily skin! Since lemons are a natural antiseptic and sugar is an exfoliant, this combination will open up your pores and penetrate the skin to fight acne.

By simply added these steps to your daily skin routine, you will see a major difference in the way your skin looks and feels:

  • Avoid Washing Your Face Too Much – Over-washing your face in one day is going to dry your skin out faster than you think. Wash your face in the evening after a long day and use your moisturizer. In the morning, refresh your skin with a warm cloth but avoid scrubbing your face with any cleanser. By over-washing your face, you prevent the regeneration of skin cells and oils that will come in handy when the temperature drops.
