Although you (and your stomach) may be yearning for some holiday fun, your skin is not. Fight the post-Thanksgiving breakout by reading up on some tips to help your skin through this delicious and joyous holiday.

Travel

November and December are the busiest travel months of the year, as people are making their journeys home to the family. Whether you are flying, driving or taking the train home this year, keep in mind that traveling often causes your skin to lose its moisture. The mix of recycled air, the stress that comes with traveling and the lack of sleep can leave your skin looking dull and dry. The key is to stay hydrated with the help of a heavy moisturizer and by drinking water.

Food Consumption

Fatty and sugary foods almost always increase the chance of a breakout. If you are prone to acne, avoid greasy foods this holiday season and add foods that contain healthy oil such as nuts, salmon, and eggs. The healthy oil will keep your skin from breaking out and drying out.

Stress

The combination of increased stress and alcohol consumption can negatively affect your skin. That being said, don’t let your mom’s comment about your pumpkin recipe get under your skin. The clarity of our skin is often contingent on our emotional stability.

Start November With A Skin Detox

FYBC 11:2Our skin could use a detox, especially after Halloween weekend. We most likely didn’t get enough sleep, possibly forgot to wash our faces before bed and definitely ate too much candy. All of the above can cause your skin to act out! To get your body and skin back on track, start this month with a little skin detox.

Start With The Facial

Use Steam To Clean Your Face

Steaming your face after cleansing allows the ingredients to better penetrate your pores and pull out more grime and dirt. If you don’t have a face steamer, a steamy shower works great too. If you are without a steam shower, boil a pot of water then transfer the water to a bowl. Place your face over the water then cover your head with a towel to lock in the steam. Stay covered for about 10 minutes.

Clay & Mud Masks

Formulas that contain clay and mud remove pollutants and impurities from the top layers of the skin. If you add a little water to your favorite clay or mud mask and keep the mask on until it is soft (not totally dry). TIP: The essentials oils in a mud mask will dry up if you keep it on until it cracks and dries.  

Hydrate (with Only Water!)

If your skin is crying for help, one of the best things you can do is drink more water. The daily recommended intake of water is around 91 ounces, although few people actually get this much. Not to mention that coffee, alcohol and sugary drinks further dehydrate the body. Although we love our wine and coffee, while your skin is in distress consider switching your morning cup of coffee with green tea.

Ways To Prevent Dry Skin

Although we love the autumn season here at FYBC, there are some downsides to fall and winter in Colorado. Dry skin is certainly a common symptom for most during this time of this year, however, there are a few ways to combat dry, irritated skin during colder weather. By simply added these steps to your daily skin routine, you will see a major difference in the way your skin looks and feels:

  • Avoid Washing Your Face Too Much – Over-washing your face in one day is going to dry your skin out faster than you think. Wash your face in the evening after a long day and use your moisturizer. In the morning, refresh your skin with a warm cloth but avoid scrubbing your face with any cleanser. By over-washing your face, you prevent the regeneration of skin cells and oils that will come in handy when the temperature drops.
  • Pair Your Moisturizer With Oil – Give your moisturizer a little help by adding a few drops of pure argan oil. The oil will replenish your skin and keep your face looking supple and glowing all day long. Argan oil has intense lasting power and will keep your skin hydrated!
  • Try A Hydrating Facial Mask – Once or twice a week give your skin a little love with a hydrating face mask. You can make your own using honey and plain yogurt. Leave your mask on for 15 minutes and then rinse it off. You will find that your face will look hydrated and happy!

  5. 1 TBSP of Honey
  6. ½ TSP of Lemon

Mix the ingredients together and gently massage the scrub into the surface of your skin. Exfoliate as needed and then rinse off the mixture with warm water.
